Introduction to the Master of Music Education (M.M.E.) Program


The Master of Music Education degree consists of 30 hours of advanced coursework. The comprehensive curriculum is designed for both public school educators and those planning to pursue doctoral-level study. The Department of Music's entrance examination in music history and music theory helps ensure accurate academic planning for each student.
The program is offered by the Department of Music within the College of Liberal Arts and Communication.
Additional Admission Requirements
Students seeking admission to the Master of Music Education program must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School as well as the program's specific requirements. In addition, applicants must have completed a four-year teacher education program. Applicants who have not completed a four-year teacher education program may be required to complete undergraduate coursework for licensure. These courses may be completed concurrently with graduate coursework but must be finished before the degree is awarded. Applicants must also take the A-State Department of Music entrance examination in music history, written music theory, and aural music theory.

Admission to the MME program requires students to submit:
- Official transcripts for coursework and verification of completion of a degree in music education or an approved equivalent.
- A Letter of Interest (minimum 500 words, maximum 750 words) describing your current professional status/career goals following completion of the MME degree and a brief overview of your music education philosophy.
- A resume/CV.
- A minimum of three (3) professional letters of recommendation.
- An example of your teaching (must be an audiovisual recording of an ensemble or group music lesson; minimum 5 minutes, maximum 10 minutes).
In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet the following GPA benchmarks:
- Unconditional admission – Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.00 (or 3.25 over the last 60 hours).
- Conditional admission – Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 (or 3.00 over the last 60 hours).
