How to choose

Choose the right major in 3 steps

US universities are divided into colleges, each managing a family of related majors. When you apply to A-State you choose a major and are automatically placed in its college — choose Computer Science, for example, and you belong to the College of Engineering & Computer Science. That placement determines your academic advisor, labs, internal scholarships and later graduate-assistant opportunities, so it pays to understand the college before you lock in a major.

Accreditation — why it matters for your degree

HLC (institution-wide, since 1928)

The Higher Learning Commission accredits all of A-State — the condition for US recognition of the degree and for issuing I-20s to international students.

AACSB — Business

Only about 6% of business schools worldwide hold AACSB accreditation. A-State has been accredited at undergraduate level since 1979 and for the MBA since 1985.

ABET — Engineering

Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering are ABET-accredited — required for the Professional Engineer (PE) licence track in the US.

ACEN — Nursing

The nursing program is ACEN-accredited with a 100% NCLEX pass rate (Jul 2023–Jun 2024).

CAEP — Education

Teacher-preparation programs meet CAEP standards — needed for US teaching licensure.

CEA — English (ELA)

The English Learning Academy is CEA-accredited through December 2027 — finish level 6 and enter your degree directly, no IELTS required.

STEM majors and 36-month OPT

After graduating, international students may work in the US for 12 months under Optional Practical Training (OPT). If your major is on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list, you can extend by a further 24 months — 36 months of legal work in total, which means three H-1B lottery attempts instead of one.

At A-State most programs in the College of Engineering & Computer Science, College of Sciences & Mathematics and College of Agriculture, plus several quantitative business majors such as Business Analytics and Information Systems, are STEM-designated. STEM majors are flagged on each college page. Confirm the exact CIP code with your advisor before applying, because DHS updates the list periodically.

OPT is a US immigration (USCIS) regulation that applies to all universities; durations and conditions can change with federal policy.

ELA

English not there yet? Enter your major through ELA

If you do not yet have TOEFL 61 / IELTS 5.5 (undergraduate) or TOEFL 79 / IELTS 6.0 (graduate), you can receive conditional admission and study at the English Learning Academy (6 levels, 11:1 classes, CEA-accredited). Completing the top level moves you straight into your chosen degree — no retest required.

Frequently asked questions about programs

Can I change my major after enrolling?

Yes. Undergraduates change majors through their academic advisor. If you switch within the first one or two semesters and the general-education core overlaps, your graduation date usually does not move. Switching colleges (for example Business to Engineering) may require catching up on prerequisites.

Which A-State majors are STEM?

Most engineering, computer science, mathematics, natural science and agriculture programs, plus some quantitative business majors, are on the DHS STEM list. College pages show a STEM badge next to each program. Confirm the specific CIP code with an advisor.

Will an A-State degree be recognised in my country?

A-State holds institution-wide HLC accreditation — a regional accreditation recognised by the US Department of Education. Degrees from regionally accredited US universities are the ones national education authorities and employers normally recognise; the procedure differs from country to country, and the office can point you to the right one.

Are there fully online programs?

Yes. A-State Online offers many programs, including an Online MBA and online bachelor’s degrees ranked by US News 2026. Note that F-1 visas require in-person study on campus, so online programs suit learners who stay in their home country and need no visa.

Does the College of Veterinary Medicine admit international students?

The College of Veterinary Medicine welcomed its first class on 11 August 2026. International eligibility and tuition have not yet been fully published — our admissions team will update this page when official information is available.

Need help choosing a major and pathway?

A-State’s authorized international admissions office offers free 1-on-1 advising: majors that match your strengths, entry requirements, scholarships and OPT.
