US Scholarships 2027: What's Real at A-State and How to Qualify

If you have been searching for “US scholarships 2027” or trying to figure out how much of a US degree can actually be covered by financial aid, you have probably run into vague promises of “50–100% scholarships.” At A-State the picture is much simpler and more transparent: there are three official undergraduate scholarship types, each with clear requirements, and none of them cover a full year's cost by itself. Here is exactly what exists, plus a real cost example so you know what to plan for.

The three scholarship types that actually exist

For undergraduates, A-State reviews three scholarship categories based on your academic record:

In practice, if you are an incoming freshman with a 3.25 GPA and a strong SAT/ACT score, A-State applies whichever award best fits your file — you do not stack the freshman and merit awards on top of each other. Graduate funding works differently, covered below.

There is no separate scholarship application

This is the question we hear most often: A-State does not have a standalone scholarship form. Awards are determined automatically from your admission application itself, based on your transcript, converted GPA, and SAT/ACT scores if you submit them. So the single most useful thing you can do is submit a complete, accurate application as early as possible, so admissions has everything it needs to evaluate both admission and scholarship eligibility at the same time.

Graduate students: assistantships (GA), not GPA scholarships

At the graduate level, the main form of funding is not a GPA-based scholarship but a Graduate Assistantship. A-State awards more than 250 GA positions each year, typically 20 hours of work per week for a department or office, in exchange for a waiver of out-of-state tuition. Assistantships are usually finalized around the “11th class day” of the semester, so if you are targeting a GA, reach out to your prospective department well before the term starts rather than waiting until the deadline.

Scholarships don't cover everything — a real calculation

This is the part a lot of articles skip. A $3,000/year scholarship sounds substantial, but the estimated annual cost for an international undergraduate taking 12 credits per semester at A-State — tuition, fees, room and board (about $12,220), and mandatory health insurance (about $1,100) — currently runs around $29,646/year.

Illustrative example: a freshman awarded the $3,000/year International Freshman Scholarship would still need to cover roughly $26,646/year out of pocket — before one-time costs such as the $50 application fee, $350 international deposit, $280 health screening, and $100 housing deposit. This example is based on published 2026–27 figures only; your actual number depends on your major, credit load, and housing choice. Admission minimums you need before scholarships even matter

A scholarship only matters once your file clears admission. For undergraduates, the baseline is a 2.3 GPA plus one English proof: TOEFL 61, IELTS 5.5, or Duolingo 110. If you submit SAT/ACT, the reference minimums are SAT EBRW 550 or ACT 21. Keep in mind these are admission floors — to actually receive the freshman or transfer scholarship you need a GPA of 3.25 or higher, well above the minimum for simply being admitted.

If your English scores are not there yet, A-State's English Language Academy (ELA) is a legitimate alternate path in: complete ELA and you will not need to submit TOEFL or IELTS separately.

A prep checklist to maximize your scholarship chances

• Translated, GPA-converted high school or university transcripts
• English proficiency proof (TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo) or an ELA study plan if you're not there yet
• SAT/ACT scores if you want to be considered for a merit tier
