Financial Documents and the I-20 at A-State: A Guide for Parents

Parents preparing an application for Arkansas State University (A-State) often ask the same questions: what exactly is the I-20, how much money needs to be shown, and which documents come first. This article lays out the general principles for families applying to the currently open terms: Spring 2027 (deadline November 1, 2026), Summer 2027 (deadline March 2, 2027), and Fall 2027. Costs, deadlines and requirements can change from year to year, so please confirm the current figures with the Vietnam Office before submitting anything.
What the I-20 is and why proof of funds comes first
The I-20 is a form issued by a school certified by the US government's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), such as A-State, once a student has been admitted. It is not a visa. It is the document a student needs to apply for an F-1 student visa at a US Embassy or Consulate. Before issuing the I-20, the university must confirm that the student's family or sponsor can cover tuition, fees, housing, health insurance and living costs for at least the first year of study. A-State publishes estimated costs of attendance, and families can get a general sense of the figures using the cost of attendance calculator. However, the exact amount required for I-20 purposes is announced separately by the university for each academic level and intake term. The Vietnam Office will confirm the required figure in writing for each applicant; parents should not rely on estimates or figures shared informally.
The sequence from application to arrival
The standard process, also outlined in full on the Admissions Timeline page, runs as follows:
- Submit the application before the deadline — see the Deadlines page for all dates.
- Receive the admission letter once the academic portion of the application is reviewed and approved.
- Prepare and submit financial documentation that matches the exact format and requirements published for that intake term.
- The university reviews the financial documents and issues the I-20, typically an electronic copy first, followed by the original.
- Pay the SEVIS (I-901) fee, which is required before scheduling a visa interview.
- Attend the F-1 visa interview at a US Embassy or Consulate, bringing the I-20 and any other requested documents.
- Prepare for arrival: flights, housing, and move-in logistics.
Each step takes processing time, so families should start gathering financial documents as early as possible, ideally at the same time the application is submitted rather than after the admission letter arrives.
Common types of financial documents
As a general rule, US universities, including A-State, typically accept one or a combination of the following:
- Bank savings passbooks held in the student's or sponsor's name, current and confirmed by the issuing bank.
- Bank balance confirmation letters issued by the bank, showing the balance as of a date close to submission.
- Sponsor letters (affidavits of support) when a relative is financing the student's studies, usually accompanied by proof of the family relationship and the sponsor's source of income, such as an employment contract or business registration.
These documents generally need to be translated into English, with certified translation if required, and must be current according to the rules set for that intake term. The specific list of accepted documents, how recent they must be, and the exact amount to be shown are announced by A-State for each intake cycle. The Vietnam Office reviews each family's documents and confirms the requirements in writing before submission, which helps avoid delays caused by an incorrect format or a missing document.
Timing notes to avoid missing a deadline
For the terms currently accepting applications, financial documentation should be planned backward from the deadline:
| Intake term | Application deadline |
|---|---|
| Spring 2027 | November 1, 2026 |
| Summer 2027 | March 2, 2027 |
| Fall 2027 | See the Deadlines page |
After the I-20 is issued, the student pays the SEVIS fee and then schedules a visa interview. Appointment wait times at Embassies and Consulates vary by location and time of year and are outside the university's control. For this reason, families should aim to complete financial documentation and secure the I-20 well ahead of the deadline rather than waiting until the last weeks.
Questions parents often ask
Is the I-20 the same as a visa? No. The I-20 is the document needed to apply for an F-1 visa; it is not the visa itself.
Who can act as a financial sponsor? Typically a parent, close relative, or sponsoring organization, along with documents proving the relationship and financial capacity. Specifics should be confirmed with the Vietnam Office for each case.
Does the amount shown need to match the full year's cost exactly? The required amount is set by the university for each term and academic level. The Cost of Attendance page is a useful reference for the categories of expenses involved, but the figure required for the I-20 will be confirmed separately.

Financial documentation is one of the steps most likely to delay a file if it is not prepared in the correct format. The A-State Vietnam Office reviews documents before submission, confirms the specific requirements in writing for each intake term, and supports families through the I-20, SEVIS fee, and visa steps.
