A-State Now Has 136 Faculty Certified in Effective Teaching

Arkansas State University has held a pinning ceremony for 33 faculty members who earned Effective Teaching certification through the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE).

The figure worth noting

This was the fifth cohort to go through the programme at A-State. The university now has 136 ACUE-certified faculty members, with training for a new cohort already underway.

ACUE is nationally recognised for its year-long professional development programme, which equips educators with evidence-based teaching practices.

Why a story about faculty is worth a student’s time

When comparing US universities, people look at rankings, tuition and admission rates. What the teaching is actually like in the room is close to unmeasurable — it appears in no ranking table.

The number of faculty who have completed a year-long programme in how to teach is one of the few measurable signals there is. It does not guarantee any individual class will be good, but it does show whether an institution spends money and time on teaching — and 136 people across five cohorts is not a token exercise.

Recognition

Petra Kohlmann, senior partnership director at ACUE, attended the event and thanked Dr. Melanie Wicinski and Dr. Jill Simons “for their leadership and for making the evening such a thoughtful celebration of A-State’s faculty”.
