Dr. Marques J. Ruff to Join the A-State Department of Music this Fall

JONESBORO — The Department of Music at Arkansas State University (A-State) will welcome a new faculty member this fall. Dr. Marques J. Ruff will serve as director of vocal music education and associate director of choral activities.
“This unique role gives me the opportunity to collaborate closely with both preservice music educators and aspiring professional musicians,” Ruff said.
Ruff will work with students beyond those on campus.
Dr. Ryan Sullivan, director of choral activities and vocal studies coordinator, said, “His duties will include serving as an active clinician at high schools throughout the Mid-South region, as well as serving as a conductor and adjudicator at choral festivals across the country.”
“The prospect of engaging with the broader student community at A-State is truly exciting. My goal is to foster their intellectual curiosity, nurture empathy for humanity, and explore innovative ways to contribute meaningfully to our global society,” Ruff added.
Ruff is an educator, bass-baritone and conductor. He has appeared with several orchestras and choruses as a soloist around the world. He is currently a member of several of the nation's finest choral ensembles, including the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Exigence and Conspirare.
Sullivan said Ruff's work will continue to enhance the recognition of the music program at A-State across the United States.
After earning his bachelor's degree in music education and performance from Central Connecticut State University, Ruff earned two Master of Music degrees, one in choral conducting and the second in vocal performance, from the University of Missouri. He earned his doctorate in music education with an emphasis in choral conducting from Florida State University.
