A-State Junior Meah Barbee Named Gilman Scholar

JONESBORO – Meah Barbee, a junior marketing major at Arkansas State University (A-State), has been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. She will take part in a summer marketing internship at PAL K.K. Agency in Tokyo, Japan.

“I was so surprised and grateful when I found out I had received the Gilman Scholarship. I felt proud that my hard work had paid off. I applied myself and stayed positive even when I thought this opportunity might not pay off financially,” Barbee said.

The Gilman Scholarship provides funding for students who want to study abroad but might not otherwise have the opportunity. Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward the cost of their study abroad or internship.

Barbee has served with AmeriCorps, been mentored on transfer research, and is a member of the Environmental Club.

After graduating in August, Barbee hopes to teach English in Japan and pursue a master's degree in business.

“My advice to others is, don't let where you start hold you back from where you can go,” Barbee said.

This spring, the U.S. Department of State announced that more than 2,000 undergraduate students received Gilman grants. The students, including Barbee, will study or intern in more than 90 countries and represent more than 500 colleges and universities in the United States.
