A-State to Host First-Ever "Freshman Day of Service" on September 24

Arkansas State University (A-State) will host its first-ever Freshman Day of Service on Wednesday, September 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event aims to mobilize more than 2,000 freshmen to take part in community service projects, reflecting the university's commitment to educating leaders and enriching lives.
Purpose and Significance of the Event
According to Dr. Shaquita Renelique, Director of the First-Year Experience Program, the event is designed to help new students build a sense of belonging, pride, and responsibility toward the community from their very first days on campus. It is a way for students to understand that college is not only about gaining knowledge but also about becoming part of something greater.
Activities by Colleges and Programs
All of A-State's academic colleges are taking part in the event, with each college assigned a specific service project:
- College of Agriculture: Organizing a food fundraising drive.
- College of Engineering and Computer Science: Building garden beds.
- College of Liberal Arts and Communication: Writing letters to patients at St. Jude Hospital.
In addition, the First-Year Experience (FYE) program and Volunteer A-State will host a Nonprofit Organization Fair, giving students the opportunity to connect with local and regional organizations to continue volunteering in the future.
This is a collaborative effort to introduce freshmen to the value of giving back and contributing to the community.
